Rare German WW2 Double Decal SS RZM Transitional Helmet

Rare German WW2 Double Decal SS RZM Transitional Helmet

Very rare example of a German World War II Double Decal SS Transitional Helmet, utilizing an earlier M16 or M18 helmet shell refurbished for continued service under the Third Reich. Transitional helmets of this type were updated with the newer M31 liner system and period decals, representing the evolution between Imperial German World War I helmets and the later standardized M35 combat helmets.

The helmet features the highly desirable dual decal configuration associated with early SS issue examples. The left side retains the iconic SS runes shield decal, while the right side displays the Party shield decal with national colors surrounding a central swastika. Both decals show notable age, wear, and patina consistent with the shell’s finish and long-term field use. The shell presents with a heavily aged appearance throughout, characteristic of untouched early-war examples.

Interior examination reveals a visible factory-style marking appearing possibly as “F.W.T.” or “F.Z.” within a circle, likely relating to an early shell maker or size designation. The M31 liner remains present and displays heavy dryness, deterioration, and cracking to the leather from age and storage. The chinstrap is also present and heavily worn.

The designation “RZM” references the Reichszeugmeisterei, the National Quartermaster’s Office responsible for regulating early SS equipment production prior to the establishment of later SS supply systems. Transitional SS helmets remain among the most sought-after categories of German militaria due to their rarity, early-war association, and unique crossover between Imperial and Third Reich equipment patterns.

Highlights
Double decal SS configuration
• Refurbished M16 or M18 shell
M31 liner system present
• SS runes shield and Party shield decals retained
• Possible interior marking: “F.W.T.” or “F.Z.”

The liner leather displays notable dryness, deterioration, and cracking. The chinstrap remains attached but heavily worn.
